I just discovered an interesting twist. The guest doesn't freeze, only the player interface does (can still click shutdown, etc. from the player drop down). I can RDP to the guest and it's fine.

Sounds like you have a similar issue, instead of updating the old version to the new one, try uninstalling VMWare Player and freshly install the new version. That helped me.
