Don't worry, the update does not touch the virtual machines. What I would recommend though, is to download the installation package and run the update manually rather than using the online update. André

There are probably two .msi files in the extracted files, vmwareplayer_x86.msi and vmwareplayer_x64.msi, and you need to select the platform appropriate and then right-click and select Install, or just...

Welcome to the Community, please take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1027986 to see whether this solves the issue. This is often caused by a wrong registry entry for the Internet Zones. André

The previous info was for VMware Player 5, sorry, for VMware Player 3 it is the "vmware player.msi" file.  Note the .msi extension is hidden by default.
