Since you said "...from a system that was having hardware issues...", my suggestion would be to do a Windows 7 repair install aka an in-place upgrade installation to repair a flaky existing install.

I'd uninstall VMware Tools, reboot and then try starting the GUI. If you are able to use the GUI then reinstall VMware Tools, reboot and see if there are any issue with VMware Tools and the GUI. BTW...
