VMWare Player immediately exits (Linux Mint 14)

Hi All,

I've installed VMWare Player on Linux Mint 14 (32-bit, running on a MacBook Pro). 

Installation went well and the player runs, but whenever I try to start a VM it immediately exits.  I can't find anything in the logs to explain it.

I've seen suggestions to run:

... which I did, but the problem persists.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  The last time I ran VMWare Player on Linux it worked straight out of the box; my latest experience is proving quite frustrating.
