Thanks for a great reply drgreen. Straight to the point and easy to follow. I had a look at the downloads again.  If you enter"VMware player" in the search box for the forum the first couple of pages show Workstation download links only. Keeping going to the third page gives VMware Player v4.0. v4.01, v4.02 and v4.05 download links.  Which would be the best choice?

Sorry to ask for more but what will happen if I try to install version 4.(?)  in Windows 7 bearing in mind that I have the latest version of VMware Player successfully installed running XP and Ubuntu?  Can I have two different versions of VMware Player installed on the same Host OS or will I mess up my setup which works fine apart from the useless copies of Windows 98 and 2000 on which I've wasted so much time?  I could install version 4 on my Windows XP desktop if you think that two versions of VMware player together is not advisable.

I'll not be building a Windows 98 system but your suggestions for doing so could be really useful to others.
