I had a similar problem some month back so I made a backup of the Virtual Machine then uninstalled the VMPlayer and the VMConverter. I then installed the Player again and same issue so I once again removed it, but this time I also went through the Registry removing all instances of anything VMWare and there were quite a lot.
Rebooted, installed Player and copied the V-Machine back and bingo all working. I am running win8 on an Acer V5 laptop with an i5 and 6G RAM.
Hope that may help a little.
