The type of controller and disk on the Host is irrelevant! 
Using VMware Player 6 when I originally created the "Windows XP Professional.vmdk" virtual hard disk it defaulted to IDE however in the vmware.log file is has, scsi0:0.fileName = "Windows XP Professional.vmdk" and that is why I recreated it. Without additional information I can only assume the virtual disk was added after the initial creation of the empty Virtual Machine and can only go by what's in the log file!
