Hi, Woody, I was hoping you'd reply.

... what you're seeing is normal and expected as that is the compatibility version ...

Compatibility version?

... not the product version.

According to Getting Started with VMware Player the product version is 5.0.2.

There are 2 versions of Player? How do I get just the product version? I don't want to risk what I've been going through for the last week - it's been an unproductive disaster.

Woody, the bottom line is that when I updated (not upgraded) Player, I saw each 'update' notification (Windows, Linux, Solaris, and Novel) automatically change from "version 5.0.2" (the current Player version number) to "version 9.2.3" (the current Workstation version number) just prior to each download/update. After the 'update', when I attempted to use the "Virtual Machine Settings" dialog to change a setting for a VM, Player locks up.

Never mind what the uninstaller leaves behind. I noticed it and thought I'd document it. It's not the issue.

Thanks, Woody, I hope you can clarify for me. A few months ago you told me that there's no connection between Player & Workstation, that that's why they have different names, but there seems to be some sort of relationship between Player & Workstation - at least when I try to 'update' Player. If Player is going to unexpectedly convert part of itself to Workstation and then stop working sometime in the future, that's a serious problem that I must avoid.
