VMware tends to stay a bit behind the curve so to speak with the latest modern linux distributions/kernels however they do eventually include support as time goes by. For the officially supported ones you can find them in the "Supported Guest and Host Operating Systems" section of Compatibility Guides using VMware Workstation as the reference point as it includes VMware Player.
As far as getting a comment from VMware on this, the typically response is it's against VMware Policy to discuss unannounced features, time lines, etc., blah... blah... blah!
